Just heard me mam on about a new rave thats wanted 2 be open in birtley by a bloke who had summit to do with the monkey and its been axed, as u can tell a dont really know the details cos me mams backward but is it true she reckons it says in the chronicle that it wont be an all night rave or summit.

aye but places like that usually work with the police well before the event to try and prevent it. The new monkey had a bad reputation and no one on here could say it worked with the police to try and stop drugs and that..

Thats why they wont want to give a license to any one who was involved with that place

Nightspot proposal axed

Fears of trouble have sank a bid to open a nightclub in a Tyneside town.

Graham Brown, who had links with a notorious nightspot, had applied to take over the licence of Oliver's Club in Harraton Terrace, Birtley, Gateshead.

But after hearing objections from Northumbria Police, councillors have refused to transfer the licence to his name.

Members of Gateshead Council's licensing sub-commitee felt if approved "the licensing objectives of the prevention of crime and disorder would be jeopardised".

The premises have space for up to 800 people and it is understood it was the intention to open it as a rave club.


Mr Brown has connections with the New Monkey in Sunderland which was forced to close its doors last December following the drugs death of a teenager.


The venue has been plagued by drugs, including the death of 18-year-old Garry Henderson, of Cambridge Street, Cruddas Park, Newcastle, who collapsed after taking around five Ecstasy pills at an all-night rave in July 2003.


A police raid in March last year discovered Class A drugs and children as young as 14 on the premises.


It followed months of complaints from families in the area about drug abuse and anti-social behaviour by teenagers leaving the club in the early hours.


Mr Brown has 21 days to appeal against the sub committee's decision.


Chief Insp Steve Readie, of Gateshead Area Command, said: "Police objected on the grounds of prevention of crime and disorder.


"Mr Graham is known to have been involved in the running of the New Monkey club in Sunderland and there was significant disturbance to the local community associated with crime and disorder."


Councillors considered an application to transfer the premises licence to Mr Brown and upheld the police objections.


A council spokesman said: "It was refused because the sub committee was satisfied that if the transfer to Mr Brown was approved the licensing objectives of the prevention of crime and disorder would be jeopardised."


The refusal is welcomed by local councillor Neil Weatherley.


"I am pleased because I don't think the town is the right place for a rave club," he said.


"Birtley is a small community and we are not geared to having a club of this nature.


"To be a success it would have to bring a lot of people into the town and there are concerns from past experience that people would have no respect for people or their property.


"I hope that if there is an appeal that magistrates when they hear it will treat it in a similar fashion."
