I Have Many Good Memories About Both Of These Clubs Thats Why It`s Hard To Choose Which 1 Was The Best, when The Colosseum Music Got A Bit To Cheesy I`d Chill Out Or I`d Go And Talk To People Whereas In Judgement Day If The Music Got A Bit To Cheesy In The Main Arena I`d Go Into The Gabba/old School Room.the Only Problem Is We Need Clubs Like Them Now Playing Proper Hardcore Like Rotterdam Music.bass Generator Sort Yourself Out And Jump Back On The Wagon We Need You!!!

Sorry, but I find it funny.......... loads of 15 year olds.....oops...sorry...16 year olds discussing what were the best "rave" clubs in the North East.
The Blue Monkey (with original line-up and owners, etc) closed in 1993, The Venue burned down in 1995 and the Collosseum closed in 1996 didn't it? So......that makes these people about 8 or 9 years old at the time!!!
The "Best Rave" in the North East could have been any of the following places:
Philmores, Saltburn
Eclipse, Stockton
Blue Monkey, Sunderland (best in my eyes before I was DJ'ing)
After Dark, Sunderland
The Venue, Spennymoor
Collosseum, Norton
There were others too, but they were the main ones from 1991 to 1996 or so.
Everyone will have fond memories of certain clubs, so for you lot to decide which was best is a bit daft innit? Obviously, I'm going to say The Venue was best because I worked there.....It was superb!!!! However.....when I was just a clubber/punter/customer, The Blue Monkey was by far the best for me!!! Brilliant atmosphere, brilliant crowd, superb music and no trouble!!
Stockton Eclipse and the later After Dark were both edgy, dark holes full of some right dodge pots, but they were still brilliant in their own way!!!

We need some older ravers to tell some good stories from the old raves. Even some photos etc.
90% of people who visit this site will only have heard of the Colosseum era as the old original rave. But Rave really starts back in the techno days of the Blue Monkey. First rave in the Sunderland wasn't it? and what about the old warehouse raves of the NRG HOUSE days down on the keyside?
.....someone needs to tell a good story of how it all started.

WHEN I FIRST WENT TO POWERHOUSE, ADRIAN STREET WAS ON THE DECKS, EVERYONE WHO WAS IN THERE WAS HAPPY AS F**K,FRIENDLY,THEY WOULD BUY YOU DRINKS,THATS HOW GOOD THE ATMOSPHERE WAS IN THE POWERHOUSE IN THEM DAYS.I`D SEE JASON BUSHBY WALKING ABOUT SORTING THE LIGHTNING OUT - CAN`T REALLY RECALL HIM PLAYING ON THE DECKS,I TALKED TO MIKEY B AND DIDN`T HAVE A CLUE WHAT I SAID TO HIM OR WHAT HE SAID TO ME BUT I REMEMBER TALKING TO HIM FOR ABOUT 10/15 MINS,I ALSO REMEMBER DJ EXCEL THEY HAD TO GET A BEER CRATE FOR HIM TO STAND ON TO PLAY ON THE DECKS,IT WAS THEN WHEN I FIRST STARTED TAKING PILLS £10 FOR 1 WHICH I DONE HALF AT A TIME AS THEY WERE MUCH STRONGER BACK IN THEM DAYS AND THERE WAS ONE LAD WHO USED TO SAY TO ME THERE 33% CHANCE OF DYING OR F++KING UP AND THAT CHANCE WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TONIGHT - HE WAS ONLY HAVING A LAUGH WITH ME, HE WAS A SOUND LAD WHO I USED TO SEE IN THE HOLGATE AT AYRESOME PARK WHEN I USED TO GO WITH DJ CULTURE HE`S SEEN ME IN SOME STATES AS WE USED TO LIVE TOGETHER BACK IN 93/4/5 NOT TO SURE ABOUT EXACT YEARS AS I`M NEARLY 26 NOW.I REMEMBER 1 TIME WHEN I WAS AT THE FRONT OF THE DANCEFLOOR IN FRONT OF THE DJ/MC AND THE LAD WHO I WENT WITH HIS FEET WERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME BUT HIS HEAD WAS MILES AWAY (PROBABLY DUE TO ME TRIPPING OUT ON POPPERS AS THERE WAS A LAD IN THERE WHO`D ALWAYS COME AND FIND ME AND GIVE ME HIS POPPERS,ID HAVE A BLAST AND GIVE HIM THEM BACK AND LOOK AT THE LIGHTS)NEXT THING I KNOW SOMETHING NUDGED ME IN THE BACK(EVEN THOUGH HIS FEET WERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, I RECOGNISED HIS TRAINERS THATS WHY I KNOW THEY WERE HIS FEET AND I TURNED ROUND AND QFX WERE GETTING READY FOR THERE LIVE PA - I THINK THAT WAS THE NIGHT I WAS TALKING TO MIKEY B.I WILL LET YOU KNOW SOME OF MY MEMORIES OF THE COLOSSEUM WHEN I`VE GOT TIME TOO MANY.HOPEFULLY THIS WILL GET OTHER PEOPLE TO MENTION THERE MEMORIES. :)

It came from a Google search mate, just joined up to answer some guys question, he was asking about the old school, I sampled most of the venues around the northeast and others around the country.
Coliseum was ok but not even close to the blue Monkey in Sunderland, it was in a class of it's own. The Venue in spennymoor was not bad either

The Colosseum was good for the first few weeks of opening, back when it was called Club Fiesta/Sunrise. After a while though it became the same everytime that you went. Same tunes, same DJ's week in week out. There was nothing special about going, you knew excatly what you were going to get. This was a shame as it had the potential and crowds to become one of the finest venues in the UK.
I perfered the original Afterdark or Hysteria by a long way

I can only comment on the 1s i've been to and its hard to choose between the JDay and the Afterdark 2. The Judgement Day was amazing for the atmosphere and you also had a selection of rooms to go in (Main Room, Asylum Trance room, Gabba room and Old Skool Room) so you could never get bored. But i think the Afterdark just pips it for me cos i loved the German Trance and the Makina when it first started getting played - it was a fresh sound and i used to rush off me nappa to tunes like Monstersound and Start 2 Party. Also the the MCs were unreal at the 'Dark so it was perfect for me.

I dont know how people can say o the best 1 is bla bla when they havnt even been to it or o the best 1 is bla bla cos thats the only 1 they have been to ever.
Ross has the right fame of mind people can only judge from what clubs they have been to not by a pack of tapes they have built up at skool ive been to 99% of them and worked in 80% of them and they are all good in different ways there is no real no1 its just down to personal favs.
And that whos marty anyway had me rolling it was whos g-force not long ago you can tell the kids who know fuck all from the people who do.
Whos techno-t???? does anybody know answers on a skool jotter please.

colo or jd best i went to, first was blue monkey b4 it changed over to colo, was really good time for the tuneage as well watchin it change so much and speeding up, only got to jd at the union once but was unreal and everyone was up for the crack like and was a banging night, also found it at the colo everyone well up for it and friendly as fuck, if u never cracked onto someone and tried to keep ur self to ur self, u wud always get someone try to crack onto u and see who u are where u from wot u had haha. gud shit
probs go for colo coz i has some unreal times in there, and the colo judgement days were beasts too, after dark 2 was cany but always 2nd fiddle to the colo , never really came into its own till the colo closed, thing a will goto colo, when it closed so did the north easts links to the hardcore scene i think, slowly the acts coming down started to dry up, end of the era of pas and big uk djs coming down, always used to be 2 or 3 on a month at colo and had a wkd big venue, loads of places to be and kcik off and chill

Haha i only found this thread by doing a google search for Philmores but anyway..
Philmores was the kiddie back then simple as.
Check Jimmy G's profile about it. I couldn't sum it up better myself. Club Havana was great but the music was just starting to learn, wereas when phillies kicked in and Bushby brought the Italian sound to the northeast my Weekends changed forever.
I can still picture the place to this day and the walls realy did drip with sweat!!!
How the fuck 1500 got crammed in i do not know but we had room to dance(just) and room to smile the entire night. I seen legends play at that place. SOR being one, shaft, dream frequency, kicks like a mule are all pa's that can never ever be repeated!
Faces i'd love to see again, certain tunes kicking in,certain ramblings on the mic by jimmy or mecca or power.
I could rant all night about the place but i need to eat these chicken wings before they cold haha.

so how many times did you actually go because there was a different line up every week and if you remember one or two weeks it would be club nite where all residents played then others it would be clubscene nights where all top bands and dj,s mc's from around the country would perform, I have worked around many clubs and real big events and for me there was no place lke the colo evan for myself mcing in fornt of ten thousand people up at judgement day at scotland

Judgement Day I think was the best rave.
Line-ups a million times more diverse and exciting.
The Colosseum tapes, once you heard one set - you've heard every set.
NRG, Selector C, Attack, Charlie etc all mint DJ's. Really good - but let's be honest once you heard one of thier set's, you've heard them all from the Colosseum.
Might sound harsh, but that's just my opinion,
