View Full Version : UK Hardcore In The Northeast - DJ Scott was right

Lo all,
Just been to hardcoreland. What can I say? DJ Scott was bang on with his comments he made a few weeks ago about how UK Hardcore is dead in the north east.
Last night bar the errors with "turbo soundsystem" and "outside bbq" we had Scott Brown, Breeze and Force and Styles under one roof. Admittingly the set times for some of them namely Scott Brown was shit but where was everyone? Instead people were upstairs listening to their mates spin Makina which they can do any Saturday of the week. Then they come on here and complain about Jaz Promotions for fucking up over little things like a lack of an outside bbq.
The main complaint was the turnout? I've read numerous posts like "oh im glad I didn't go now" well where is the knowledge in that. If more people got off there ass and went to this event it would have really gone off.
It was called Hardcoreland. I just don't understand why people would go to a Hardcore event and not support the sound. Its not as if they had no other choice with the likes of the monkey, powerhouse and hangar 13.
Anyway im just moaning. Disapointted. I guess Scott is right people in the north east generally don't like hardcore. Just seems a bit weird that a certain part of the country can have no interest towards a sort of music. I mean ffs its HARDCORE and makina is SPANISH HARDCORE there not that much different. They have the same likable elements, its hardly RnB. Nah it sounds more like you are all sheep.
I doubt the likes of Scott Brown will be playing here again anytime soon. :(

Am not dissing anyone here but I think the problem is that alot of the young uns are banging out the monkey tapes on there walkmans after school etc so they are basicly just listening to makina thru and thru.
I have followed Hardcore from the start but I also like some spanish aswell.
I just feel ya cant just keep listening to one genre of music.
The tunes in the Hardcore arena at Hardcore Land just blew me away
I did venture into the makina arena and it was wicked to see the whole place proppa bouncing but for me it's just not my style.
I'd never dis Makina because its a popular choice whith the Northeast crowd but it was good to see the Hardcore few in the main arena proppa rocking to the quality tunage that all the dj's where banging out!

yeh its a shame really, because hardcore is amazing in production aspects and especially when scott brown is bangin it out ya get a buzz. but every argument based on this stuff is opinion so there is no real wrong or right. i think it was class that mayhem jaz promotions or whoever tried to open some minds in the northeast and basically where gambling alot of money and reputation with some uk hardcore... sadly never took off.

Its good to see some people talking sense. Ok it wasnt the best night ever but certainly not the worst. It was hyped up to be a big event because thats what we wanted and who wouldnt. I sure every raver in the northeast would love to have a regular big event to look forward to every few months.
This only states the obvious.... there is not enough ravers anymore. The days of pulling a couple of thousand into an event are gone! We had 431 people... put them in a club and you've got a wicked night.
The scene in this area is stale and has been for a long time. Its true the kids today have been brought up on monkey/hangar tapes, thats all they know but if thats what they like fine.
We run a promotion business... Hardcore Land was a chance to break the trend and give them something different. Its just a pity people couldnt broaden there horizons.

Still though as you hinted the turnout wasnt actually all that bad.
Sure 400 odd in the mcewans is going to look empty. 400 in a club is going to look full and that would wipe out all the other complaints about the event.
Jazpromotions, please dont give up on the UK hardcore sound. I think with a bit of a rethink hardcore land could have been more successful.
These are some of my ideas anyway...
Keep the same big UK names but stick big makina names between them so everyone is in the same area.
Hire a smaller venue. The likes of Twisted in glasgow seem to have it right. They have a club called Yang and Vaults or something. Anyway its basically three rooms (two of them a little bigger than the oldskool room at hardcore land). Cause of its size the attendance it gets fills the place out and everyone is happy.
Ticket prices were a little steep. £17.50 was ok but some places were charging £2.50 booking fee. I got mine from Reflex Records in Newcastle and they were ok.
Try and get Scott Brown on later. Although im sure that wasn't intentional in the first place.
Try and not put Hardcore Land on the same night as other nights.
Anyway yeah I had a well good time at hardcore land. Just seemed you were trying for the full slammin vinyl type setup, big warehouse rave, chillout areas, funfair etc but its a shame that the north east obviously can't support that, or maybe it could if you only had the main arena on at McEwans.
I still think theres room for a premier, monthly, one and only more uk hardcore focused night in the north east.

I totaly agree Rich,,,,There's a hell of a lot of upfront hardcore heads in the northeast, all be it we are way out numbered by the spanish crowd but tbh I think that comes down to experience.
I'm sure you, myself,Ty,Mayhem and many more could real off shit loads of hardcore producers and people would be thinking who the fuck are they?
Don't give up on it Jaz like everynew event it has to start somewhere.Rome wasnt built in a day was it.
Like I have said before me and our lass are true oldskoolers(31 & 33) now and have followed from day one,we went to this event with some top lads from Stockton who where half our age and in all fairness they love the spanish sound but they where just in absolute amazment at the upfront stuff that was getting banged out in the main arena and spent most of the night rocking the dancefloor down there.
If we can convert a little at a time then there is hope to get the northeast scene back on the map like it was in the mid 90's.
All I asked is just give it a chance without actualy slating it,if ya don't like it then fair enough but keep opinions to yaself as this just causes more bad vibes that the scene can do with out.
Peace

Totally agree and thanks for your support.
If we all knew how to fill a venue we would all be millionaires and unfortunately i dont have a magic wand. The night wasnt as bad as is made out on the guestbooks, we know that, but if it makes other people feel smug then let them carry on.
Its sad because without moving forward you get left behind and ultimately the northeast scene will suffer because of this attitude. Im not having a go at other promoters, were all friends, but its not going to last forever and i think the top men know that.
Ive been in the nightclub game since 1986 and im still here. Ive moved with the times, many times, and i'll move again. :D

Respect!
Overall, the night was excellent!
All the slaggin on the guestbourd is no where near a true account of the night in my opinion.
The only thing I could knock that event for is the numbers! Maybe the sound coulda been a bit louder but the only problem with the night once again, was the numbers inside!
There was nothing more that Jaz Promotions could have done to better promote this! It was advertised as far awide as Edinburgh, Doncaster thru Manchester & Sheffield.
Jaz Pro can be knocked, slated or slagged for nothing on this event as EVERYTHING was there as promised!
Apart from that is, the 2000 smiling faces!
They must have been at home watching TV rather than supporting the scene & actually bothering to go out. This spans not only on HardcoreLand, but most of the events on that night throughout the whole country. They simple weren't as busy as usual! Any of them! So the days of pulling thousands is probably true, which is a massive, massive shame!
Hopefully Jaz Promotions will put on another event of this scale but I wouldn't blame them if they didn't.
Who knows what the future holds.

been recovering for a couple ov days. now the dust is settling you can see the real picture....... the arseholes were waiting for the event to crash and as soon as they herd it was quiet they started to slag it off on sunday. but now the fact is it was a proper good night even without a full house. :D
